Every weekend the streets surge with crowds looking for love, music and oblivion. Social Work is about the people who provide it to them - those faceless heroes whose Monday morning is other people's Friday night. It's a dirty job but someone's got to do it. The film takes place over one Saturday night shift in a seedy nightclub and centres on Lee and Andy, who run the cloakroom. The club is the kind that people go to in every city and town all over the country. Andy is bone lazy and spends his time taking the piss out of the customers while Lee works enough for both of them and tries to keep Andy out of trouble. On the night in question, Lee is fatally distracted by the girl of his dreams (who unfortunately is with the man of her dreams), leaving Andy to do the impossible - work. The club's mercurial boss, Barry, who fancies himself rotten, wants to fire Andy, but has to think of a good enough excuse. He watches the two boys like a hawk but doesn't realise that they are scamming him right under his nose. Barry's secretary, Jayne, wants to get closer to her boss, but keeps getting the brush-off. The drunken head bouncer, Paddy, and his dim-witted crew keep the door, ogling the girls and playing mind-games with the young men who are desperate to get in. The head barman, Derek, is being blackmailed by the senior barman, Dan, for some unnamed indiscretion at the Christmas party. Dan, meanwhile, is tormenting the new boy, Eric, who desperately wants to impress but becomes the butt of Dan's idiotic pranks. The hot but sarcastic barmaid Tiffany spends her night fending off the attentions of the sleazy DJ, Vaughan, who is in search of a quickie with pretty much anything with a pulse. Tiffany takes pity on the clingy and insecure Dillon, who has just been dumped for the third time 'for no reason' by his gorgeous man-eating girlfriend, Amanda. Into this web of intrigue staggers the troubled customer Darren, who wants to drown his sorrows, but finds himself the unwitting target of the man-hungry Thelma, who threatens to drag him home if he fails to remain sober. Darren's drinking leads to an hallucinatory encounter on the dancefloor with a troupe of hip-shaking sirens who turn out to be less willing than they appear. He seeks refuge and, er, relief in a toilet cubicle but his ardour wilts in the face of a terrifying spectre from beyond the grave. Meanwhile, another customer, JC is trying to find a use for his out-of-date condoms. The young floor crew Chris and Adam spend the whole night 'unblocking' the ladies' toilet where they hope find love but instead receive a withering lecture on the subject of men from Drew, one of three glamorous clubbers. At the end of the night, Andy has miraculously managed to hold on to his job and keep the scam undercover; Lee, despite a poor start and a bout of existential doubt, manages to score with his dream girl; Darren evades the clutches of Thelma who finds consolation in the arms of yet another; Eric gets to keep his job, despite being caught in a highly compromising position by Derek, who finds his secret past haunting him once more; Tiffany shows Dillon that there's more room in a broken heart and Barry retreats to his office once more to plot Andy's downfall. e8c Written by Declan Reynolds
