Savita Oberoi (Tanuja) is a cold-hearted and wealthy businesswoman. Her only son Ashwin (Tushar Vohra) is soft-hearted and is in love with Pooja Sundarlal (Neela) who comes from a poor family. Her father used to be a famous poet Porash Sundarla (Aloknath) now disabled, and her mom, Sudha Sunderlal (Reema Lagoo) a housewife and teacher. Mrs. Oberoi wants her son to marry Lily, Mr. Puri's (Raza Murad) daughter, who is settled in the United States of America. When Ashwin tells his mom that he loves Neela, she consents to go to see the girl, is impressed by the poet father, but does not permit her son to marry her. Under pressure, but refusing to give up his love, Ashwin marries Pooja, and at the same to placate his adamant mom, gets engaged to Lilly.
