Dingo Dreaming is an epic search for love, intimacy and meaning in a story which is vibrant with life's natural comedies and tragedies. Dingo Dreaming mirrors the silhouettes of high society New York with that of our outback town in Australia. It is the story of one man's quest for fulfillment played out against the heroism of Aboriginal art. The film traces the intertwined professional and personal quest of Jewish-American art appraiser, Joseph Schmoot who is sent to Australia by a prominent New York Gallery to verify the provenance of a collection of Aboriginal desert artworks. Joe's trepidation grows as he learns from Macke Senner - the pilot who flies him to the Aboriginal community at Well 37 - that the community is rife with mismanagement, due to the activities of the principal administrators, Bullmore and Ruth Moffat, a venal and highly unpleasant pair of Rhodesian expatriates. Bullmore, a bullying racist Noe-Nazi with a keen understanding of desert protocol and Ruth, a self-centered gluttonous woman who can't disguise her anger at having been dragged against her will to such a hostile environment, thrive on exerting power over the Aboriginals and over visitors like Joe. Joe also encounters Jeff Staples, a failed artist and drifter who is at Well 37 to forge the desert art. Joe's inquiries quickly put him on the wrong side of the suspicious Moffat's but his openness and determination result in him forging connections with the Aboriginal people, in particular the wise man and elder Gabriel Nungawarra who not only assists him to understand the significance of the paintings but lures him into the realms of his personal trial. Joe slowly discovers love with the Doctor in charge of the remote Medical Clinic, India Giles who tries unsuccessfully to avoid community politics. Both India and Gabriel help Joe to expose the Moffat's trickery. Bullmore ruthlessly exploits a relationship with the Police whom he relies on to deal. Just when Joe looks like uncovering all, Moffat has him arrested on spurious charges and carried off to Roebourne for deportation. Joe, with the assistance of the Aboriginals, makes an ingenious escape in the Roebourne cemetery and on his return to Well 37 - a journey facilitated by the coastal elder, Friday Daniels - he assists the Aboriginals recover their artworks and confront the Moffats. A violent encounter results in the unpleasant pair losing their power and - in the case of Bullmore - undergoing a reformation of character. The strength of this story is that Aboriginals are not depicted as hopeless victims. Instead, they resolve the crisis and take charge of their destiny. b87 Written by Russell Cunningham Joseph, a prominent Jewish-American art appraiser, travels to a remote Aboriginal town in outback Australia to authenticate a collection of Aboriginal Paintings.
