CAPTURE THE FLAG follows a year in the life of two families in mid-1970s New York City. The story unfolds from the point of view of 14-year old Annie, a savvy New York kid who is trying desperately to hold her family together when everything else is falling apart. Annie is the only child of "Beat" generation parents -- Luke, a promising, young, book editor and Ellen, a Columbia University professor, battling depression. For as long as Annie can remember, the high point of Annie's year has been when her family has joined with the family of her father's best friend Peter, to play an epic game of "Capture the Flag" in upstate New York. Over the years Peter's two daughters have become Annie's surrogate sisters, while his stepson is Annie's biggest crush. But this year, the game may be cancelled, and as 1974 becomes 1975, Annie is caught trying to balance her outward persona of sophistication with her longing for the innocence and safety of childhood.
